Task Force for NBS hydro-meteorological risk reduction
An EU H2020 Task Force for NBS hydro-meteorological risk reduction contributes to the UN Environment platform.
Collaboration continues between the Horizon 2020 large-scale demonstration projects implementing Nature Based Solutions (NBS) for hydro-meteorological risk reduction. Together as a Task Force, PHUSICOS, along with OPERANDUM, RECONECT and NAIAD have submitted a joint contribution to the global call for NBSs for the upcoming UN Climate Action Summit in New York this September.
NBS is one of nine interdependent action tracks to be discussed at the Climate Action Summit. The NBS initiative is co-led by China and New Zealand and supported by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). NBS are recognized as having a high potential to limit greenhouse gas emissions, as well as underpin global climate adaptation measures focused on terrestrial, freshwater and ocean ecosystems, agriculture and sustainable food production, climate resilient infrastructure and nature connectivity for the protection of biodiversity.
The Task Force for NBS hydro-meteorological risk reduction is in good company along with the other 150 contributions that have been receivedand made available on the UN’s Environment platform. The comprehensive list demonstrates the value and feasibility of NBSs as well as illustrates their broad worldwide implementation.
Joint actions such as this are important for promoting links between research projects and relevant science-policy frameworks and networks. These clustering activities also provide opportunities for knowledge exchange, enabling synergies, as well as communicating and disseminating results to enhance the impact the projects could have for European and international policy making beyond the scale of a single project.
