Strategic framework for stakeholder mapping

A strategic framework for stakeholder mapping in co-creation of nature-based solutions is presented in order to achieve higher planning, design, and implementation efficiency.

The open access journal, Sustainability has published this paper in October of 2020 in its special issue: Nature-Based Solutions-Concept, Evaluation, and Governance.

This paper explores the need for a strategic framework to systematically identify relevant stakeholders throughout the planning, design and implementation process of a nature-based solution. While it is assumed that polycentric governance and co-creation procedures with a large spectrum of stakeholders are more effective in managing public goods, NBS projects still mainly rely on self-organized stakeholders rather than a strategic approach for setting up the co-creation process, which includes co-design and co-implementation.

In this context, 16 NBS and 359 stakeholders were analyzed, and real-life constellations were compared to theoretical typologies in order to come up with a systematic stakeholder mapping method to support the co-creation of NBS. The paper represents a multi-disciplinary collaboration between PHUSICOS partners, namely the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI) and the Technische Universität München (TUM) and the PHUSICOS’s sister project RECONECT.
