10th IALE World Congress
Since the early stages of modern landscape ecology, there has been recognition that humans, in broad sense, cannot be ignored in a landscape ecological approach that aims to be holistic and applied. Progresses have been made in the integration of both the biophysical and the cultural perspectives in landscape ecology, but this is still a challenge.
Meeting global challenges such as climate change, energy transition, migration among others also included a spatial approach, where landscape should be considered as a resilient, socio-ecological system. Especially in the current era of the Anthropocene, this integration is highly relevant and essential to tackle current environmental and societal challenges.
The International Association for Landscape Ecology (IALE) aims to develop landscape ecology as the scientific basis for the analysis, planning and management of the landscapes of the world. IALE advances international co-operation and interdisciplinary synergism within the field, through scientific, scholarly, educational and communication activities. IALE World Congresses occur every four years and bring together a large international community to address topics in landscape ecology that range from local to global in scale.
During the World Congress, landscape ecologists from public, private, and non-profit sectors will address a broad spectrum of environmental challenges and their potential solutions. The IALE World Congress is an international congress addressing Landscape Ecology and is organized by the local chapter SIEP-IALE.
IALE 2019 will feature the theme of Nature and Society facing the Anthropocene. The congress is an international meeting opportunity for anyone with an interest in landscape ecology to learn more about the latest in landscape ecology from all over the world, and to learn from others. The congress aims to build a relevant network among environmental NGO’s, civil society associations, universities, local authorities as well as institutions from any level.
What is Landscape Ecology?
Landscape Ecology is the discipline studying the interaction between spatial patterns and processes in landscapes at various scales. It includes both the biophysical and societal aspects of landscapes and is inherent to an interdisciplinary domain. The theoretical discourses and paradigms in landscape ecology link natural sciences with related human disciplines. It offers the opportunity to integrate the fundamental scientific approach of landscape ecology within planning and policy.
As members of the PHUSICOS project team, Wei Liu and Juliette Martin will give presentations on “The evolution of strategic planning in a flagship protected area of China” and “A polycentric governance approach for selecting, co-designing and implementing nature-based solutions along the Isar in Munich (Germany)”. The Wolong National Nature Reserve and the Isar represent two of WP5’s case studies on successful NBS implementation.
